A smart video doorbell is one of the most useful smart home upgrades for a Brighton property — you can see and speak to callers from anywhere, get motion alerts, and review footage if a parcel goes missing. This guide covers what to expect from installation, what the common problems are in Brighton homes, and whether you need a professional to do it.

Wired vs battery smart doorbells

The first decision is wired or battery. Both work, but they suit different properties:

Wired doorbells (Ring, Nest, Arlo)

Powered by your existing doorbell wiring. No batteries, no recharging, and the camera is always on (continuous recording on some models). However, older Brighton properties — Victorian and Edwardian terraces — often have original doorbell wiring that runs at 8–24V AC, and the transformer may not provide enough power for a modern video doorbell. We check transformer voltage before installation and replace if needed (usually £20–£40 for the part).

Battery doorbells

Easier to install — no existing wiring needed. The downside is recharging every 1–6 months depending on motion activity and camera settings. For a busy Brighton street with frequent pedestrian traffic, a battery doorbell may need charging every 4–6 weeks. Wired is better in that situation.

What affects smart doorbell installation in Brighton?

Wall type at the front door

Most Brighton terraces have solid brick or stone facades at the front. Drilling into solid masonry for a wired doorbell or camera requires a hammer drill and masonry anchors — straightforward but not a job for a standard cordless drill. Older facades with lime mortar need care to avoid cracking the mortar joints.

Existing doorbell wiring

Victorian and Edwardian properties may have the original brass bell push wiring — thin two-core wire running from the front door to a chime inside. This wiring is often still functional and can power a modern video doorbell if the transformer is adequate. We test before installation.

If there’s no existing wiring (common in flats where the original bell was removed), we can run a new cable from the nearest indoor power source, concealed in trunking along the wall or frame.

Wi-Fi signal at the front door

This is the most common problem with smart doorbells in Brighton. Victorian terraces are thick-walled — often 350–450mm of solid brick — and the router is usually at the back of the property. The front door, especially at ground or below-ground level, can have a very weak Wi-Fi signal.

Before installation, we test signal strength at the doorbell location. If it’s weak, options include: repositioning the router, adding a Wi-Fi extender near the front of the property, or using a powerline adapter to create a wired connection point near the door. We carry extenders and can advise on the best solution for your property layout.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Large parts of Brighton — Kemp Town, the Brunswick area, parts of Hove — are conservation areas. Drilling into a listed building facade, or making external changes visible from the street, may require Listed Building Consent. A small doorbell camera usually doesn’t — but check with the planning department or your managing agent if in doubt. We advise before drilling.

Smart doorbell installation: what’s involved

A standard wired installation takes 45–90 minutes and includes:

  • Test existing doorbell wiring and transformer output
  • Replace transformer if voltage is insufficient (Ring Doorbell needs at least 16V AC)
  • Mount the doorbell bracket at the correct angle and height
  • Connect wiring, fit doorbell, and test power
  • Connect to your Wi-Fi network and pair with the app
  • Set up motion zones and notification preferences
  • Test two-way audio and live view from your phone

Battery doorbell installation is quicker (30–45 minutes) — no wiring needed, just drilling and mounting.

Popular models and what suits Brighton homes

  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 — our most-installed model. Wired, slim profile, good night vision. Requires 16–24V AC transformer.
  • Ring Video Doorbell 4 — battery or wired. Good choice if existing wiring is 8–10V (below Pro requirements).
  • Google Nest Doorbell (wired) — integrates well with other Nest/Google Home devices. Good option if you already have Nest thermostats.
  • Arlo Essential Video Doorbell — battery only. Works without a subscription for local storage; cloud requires Arlo Secure plan.
